Geology (B.S.) with a Certificate in GIS

It will be possible for a student to earn both a B.S. degree in Geology and a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems without needing to take more than the total hours required for the B.S. alone. The curriculum guide below shows just one way this might be done. Please consult with the geology advisor or the department chair for details.

Major Requirements (50 hours)

Geology majors must take at least three (3) hours from one of the following introductory geosciences courses:

  • GLY 107 Gold and Diamonds,
  • GLY 108 Plate Tectonics: The Active Earth,
  • GLY 109 Great Moments in Earth History,
  • GLY 172 Geology and Human Health, or
  • GEO 210 Physical Geography

Beyond the introductory geology class, geology majors are also required to take the twenty-six (26) hour geology core plus the nine (9) hour GIS core, which includes:

  • GLY 309 Mineralogy,
  • GLY 315 Hydrology,
  • GLY 409 Petrology,
  • GLY 410 Structural Geology and Tectonics,
  • GLY 415 Sedimentary Geology,
  • GLY 420 Stratigraphy and Paleontology,
  • GLY 550 Evolution of the Earth,
  • GEO 353 Geographic Information Systems
  • GEO 456 Geographic Image Interpretation, and
  • GEO 553 Advanced GIS.

Geology majors are also required to take a minimum of twelve (12) additional hours from:

  • GLY 351 Field Methods,
  • GLY 499 Senior Thesis,
  • GEO 351 Geographic Techniques,
  • GEO 556 Advanced Geographic Imagery, and
  • STA 500 Applied Statistical Inference.

Supporting Course Requirements (12-15 hours)

Other required courses include:

  • one semester of introductory biology (BIO 100 or BIO 121),
  • one semester of Introduction to Geochemistry (GLY 210) or introductory chemistry (CHE 111 and 115),
  • one semester of math at the level of trigonometry (MAT 108) or higher, and
  • one semester of introductory physics (PHY 101 or higher).

General Education Requirements (39 hours)

Standard General Education program excluding blocks II and IVA. Refer to section four of the Catalog for details on the General Education and University Requirements.

University Requirement (1 hour)

  • ASO 100

Free Electives (24-26 hours)
