Geology (B.S.)



Major Requirements (44 hours)

Geology majors must take at least three (3) hours from any introductory geology course. Students may choose to take either:

  • GLY 107 Gold and Diamonds,
  • GLY 108 Plate Tectonics: The Active Earth,
  • GLY 109 Great Moments in Earth History,
  • GLY 172 Geology and Human Health,
  • GLY 302 Earth Science,
  • GLY 303 Global Environmental Challenges,
  • GLY 304 The World Ocean,
  • GLY 305 Dinosaurs, or
  • GEO 210 Physical Geography

Beyond the introductory geology class, geology majors are also required to take the twenty-six (26) hour geology core, which includes:

  • GLY 309 Mineralogy,
  • GLY 315 Hydrology,
  • GLY 409 Petrology,
  • GLY 410 Structural Geology and Tectonics,
  • GLY 415 Sedimentary Geology,
  • GLY 420 Stratigraphy and Paleontology, and
  • GLY 550 Evolution of the Earth.

Geology majors are also required to take a minimum of fifteen (15) additional hours from:

  • GLY 351 Field Methods,
  • GLY 408 Process Geomorphology,
  • GLY 490 Applied Geology,
  • GLY 499 Senior Thesis,
  • GLY 512 Geology of Soils,
  • GLY 535 Hydrogeology,
  • GLY 540 Biogeochemical Treatment Processes,
  • GLY 580 Special Topics,
  • GLY 315 Meteorology,
  • GEO 355 Geographic Image Interpretation,
  • GEO 553 Advanced GIS,
  • GEO 556 Advanced Geographic Imagery, and
  • STA 500 Applied Statistical Inference.
  • GLY 451 (Field Geology) or an approved six semester hour summer field camp in geology may be substitued for GLY 351 and one other course.

Supporting Course Requirements (15-16 hours)

Other required courses include:

  • one semester of introductory biology (BIO 100 or BIO 121),
  • one semester of Introduction to Geochemistry (GLY 210) or introductory chemistry (CHE 111 and 115),
  • one semester of Geographic Information Systems (GEO 353) or Geographic Image Imterpretation (GEO 355),
  • one semester of math at the level of trigonometry (MAT 108) or higher, and
  • one semester of introductory physics (PHY 101 or higher).

General Education Requirements (48 hours)

Standard General Education program. Refer to section four of the Catalog for details on the General Education and University Requirements.
