Geography (B.A.) plus a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems

It will be possible for a student to earn both a B.A. degree in Geography and a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems without needing to take more than the total hours required for the B.A. alone. The curriculum guide below shows just one way this might be done. Please consult with the geography advisor or the department chair for details.

 



Major Requirements (39 hours)

Geography/GIS students must take the following courses:

  • GEO 100 Regions and Nations of the World,
  • GEO 210 Physical Geogrpahy,
  • GEO 220 Human Geography,
  • GEO 353 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems,
  • GEO 456 Geographic Image Interpretation,
  • GEO 490 Senior Seminar, and
  • GEO 553 Advanced GIS.

Geography/GIS students must also take twelve (12) hours from the following:

  • GEO 351 Geographic Techniques,
  • GEO 455 GIS Cartography,
  • GEO 501 Advanced Geography: _________ (when topics are appropriate),
  • GEO 556 Advanced Geographic Imagery,
  • GEO 495 Practicum or GEO 498 Independent Study (when topics are appropriate).

    And an additional six (6) hours of upper-division Geography electives.

Supporting Course Requirements (12 hours)

Beyond the major requirements, Geography majors are also required to take a eighteen to twelve additional hours including:

  • one semester of introductory geology (GLY 102, 107, or 108),
  • one semester of sociology (SOC 232),
  • one semester of economics (ECO 120 or 230), and
  • one semester of computer science (CSC 104).

General Education Requirements (39 hours)

Standard General Education program excluding blocks IVB, VB, and VII (QS). Refer to section four of the Catalog for details on the General Education and University Requirements.

University Requirement (1 hour)

  • ASO 100

Free Electives (37 hours)
