Earth Science Teaching (B.S.)



Major Requirements (30-32 hours)

Earth Science Teaching students must take the following courses:

  • GLY 108 Plate Tectonics: The Active Earth,
  • GLY 109 Great Moments in Earth History,
  • GLY 303 Global Environmental Challenges,
  • GLY 304 The World Ocean,
  • GLY 351 Field Methods,
  • GEO 315 Meteorology,
  • AGR 215 Principles of Soils,
  • AST 135 Introductory Astronomy,
  • And two from the following:

  • GLY 309 Mineralogy,
  • GLY 408 Process Geomorphology,
  • GLY 410 Structural Geology and Tectonics,
  • GLY 415 Sedimentary Geology,
  • GLY 420 Stratigraphy and Paleontology,
  • GLY 512 Geology of Soils, and
  • GLY 550 Evolution of the Earth

Supporting Course Requirements (18-22 hours)

Beyond the major requirements, Earth Science Teaching majors are also required to take a eighteen to twenty-two additional hours from:

  • one semester of introductory biology (BIO 100 or 121),
  • one semester of introductory chemistry or geochemistry (GLY 210 or CHE 100 or CHE 101 and 107 or CHE 111 and 115),
  • one semester of math at the level of trigonometry (MAT 108) or higher,
  • one semester of introductory physics (PHY 101, 102, or 131), and
  • one semester of computer science (CSC 104).

Minor Requirements (14-21 hours)

A fourteen to twenty-one hour minor must be taken in an approved base teaching certificate area.

Teacher Education Requirements (31 hours)

EDF 103, 203, 319, and 413; SED 401; ESE 490, 499, and 551.

General Education Requirements (36 hours)

Standard General Education program excluding blocks II, VA, VB, and VII (QS). Refer to section four of the Catalog for details on the General Education and University Requirements.

University Requirement (1 hour)

  • ASO 100
